Continuities in Space and Time: Hybrid VR Paintings™ by Dave Alber

This exhibition explores experiences of orientation and disorientation within Suzhou with an emphasis on its cosmopolitan SIP district. Points of reference within each painting refer themselves to locations within other paintings. Thus, each painting is tied together—connected—in a web of orienting spatial interrelationships. There is dissonance however between the experience of physical space in the gallery and the virtual world of 360° panoramic VR paintings, where the paintings tie together these familiar spatial orientations in a completely new context, simultaneously “more real” and “more unreal” than the paintings in the physical environment.
