Stewardship: The Dolan House, Brooksville, Florida explores the American virtue of stewardship in small town America.
Our cultural continuity is what defines us, humanizes us, and empowers us: it elevates our thought and gives us depth of character; it expands our breadth of knowledge and re-centers us within our heart with reflections of compassion and humility; and it gives us standards of value, aesthetic awareness, and principles of balanced reasoning to appreciate and evaluate the present in light of the time-tested wisdom of the past in its long march to the present.
Culture’s survival through its long march—and in this our present—requires stewardship, the conscious maintenance and preservation of cultural value.
Cultural and historical memory maintains our connection to our shared past. In Brooksville, Florida, it is preserved in the maintenance and stewardship of a handful of Victorian homes.
One such home, the Dolan House was built in the late 1890’s by the son of one of Brooksville’s original pioneers. The current owners told me, “A few years ago, the home was purchased and converted into a bed and breakfast inn with the name The Dolan House B & B. Through the years all the owners have been great stewards and taken exceptional care of the house and the result of this gives you a well-preserved look into a home of the 1890’s.” The current owners feel strongly about this stewardship and are continuing on in this tradition.
